Ethiopia

Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa, is a rugged, landlocked country. With over 90 million inhabitants, it is the most populous landlocked country in the world, and the second most populated nation on the African continent. Ethiopia occupies a total area of 1,100,000 square km and its capital is Addis Ababa.

Motivation Australia’s usual geographical focus is the Asia Pacific Region. However we are currently supporting two projects in Tigray, the northernmost of the nine ethnic regions of Ethiopia. Tigray has amongst the highest rates of disability in Ethiopia due to a legacy of civil war, famines and lack of adequate health services.

The wheelchair repair and maintenance workshop and Women with Disabilities Association of Tigray was established with the support of Partners in Disability and Development (PDD), a South Australian based Non-Government Organisation. In April 2015 PDD wound up, after providing support to grass roots disability organisations in Cambodia and Ethiopia over a period of more than 20 years.

Motivation Australia will continue to support the Tigray projects. This work will be coordinated by our volunteer Tigray Team, all of whom are previous members of PDD. For more information contact Kylie Mines.
